Flat press-flexing of an extruded aluminum box column with thermally altered zones

The article is excerpted from the volume being published entitled Aluminum Structural Components-Designing Components and Connections According to Eurocodes and Technical Standards for Construction and specifically covers the calculation of strength and stability of an extruded section while also taking into account the presence of thermally altered, i.e., localized welds (HAZ) with comparison of the results of verifications.

This is a real case related to a braced single-story structure whose columns and beams consist of an extruded profile and are connected by bolted joints.

With the use of software "PrefleEC9Al " the calculation in plane press-flexion is presented, also taking into account the effects of the thermally altered zone (HAZ) due to the presence of the column-base plate weld.
