Calculation of Self-supporting Chimneys - part 1

This paper presents the complete calculation of a self-supporting steel chimney internally lined with refractory and consisting of a series of ashlars joined together by bolted circular flanges. The chimney is stressed by wind and earthquake actions with structure factor q=1 and is also verified for cyclic fatigue stresses due to the dynamism created by the excitatory forces of vortex detachment.

Planking verifications are performed in accordance with the American A.S.C.E. standards, which, before the European standards came into force, were the only valid reference for a detailed and complete calculation. A later article will present the differences with the European standard EN 1993-3-2, which, for verifications in the linear elastic field, refers to EN 1993-1-6.

A membrane calculation is performed by neglecting the flexural effect of the circular section subjected to non-uniform wind pressure along the contour also due to the presence of the rings of the bolted flanges of the ashlars constituting the casing.
